Abstract

The need for environmentally friendly renewable energy sources as an alternative to fossil fuels has driven the development of biofuels, particularly those derived from crude palm oil (CPO). This study aims to synthesize, characterize, and evaluate the performance of a CoN/SiO2-Al2O3 catalyst in the hydrocracking process of CPO. The catalyst was synthesized via a wet impregnation method using CoCl₂·6H₂O as the precursor, followed by calcination and nitridation using hydrogen gas and an ammonia solution. Characterization was conducted using PSA, FTIR, XRF, SAA, and XRD techniques. The resulting catalyst exhibited an average particle size of 33.62 µm and contained 83.8% SiO₂, 3.29% Al₂O₃, and 8.64% CoO, indicating successful metal impregnation into the support. FTIR analysis confirmed the formation of Co–N bonds, while XRD results revealed a phase transformation from oxide to nitride, indicated by diffraction peaks corresponding to JCPDS No. 41-0943. BET analysis showed a specific surface area of 93.19 m²/g, a total pore volume of 0.42 cm³/g, and an average pore diameter of 17.86 nm, indicating a mesoporous structure that facilitates reactant diffusion. Catalyst performance testing demonstrated that a reaction temperature of 350°C produced the highest biogasoline selectivity of 70.59%, suggesting that increasing the reaction temperature generally enhances biofuel productivity.
