Abstract

Indonesia possesses abundant coal resources; however, coal combustion can produce sulfur oxide gases. Low-quality coal typically contains high levels of sulfur and is often used as a raw material for coal briquette production. To produce environmentally friendly coal briquette fuel, special treatments are required, such as the addition of biomass to reduce sulfur content. Briquettes made from a mixture of coal and biomass are known as bio-coal briquettes. Empty Fruit Bunches (EFB) of oil palm are a type of biomass containing cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin compounds. EFB charcoal has a calorific value of 5387 cal/g, indicating its potential as an energy source. Therefore, in this study, bio-coal briquettes were produced using a mixture of semi-coke and EFB charcoal. The bio-coal briquettes were made with variations in the composition of EFB charcoal and semi-coke, activation methods, and types of binders. The resulting bio-coal briquettes were characterized by testing for moisture content, ash content, calorific value, volatile matter, total sulfur, and fixed carbon content. The characterization results showed that the produced bio-coal briquettes met the quality standards based on SNI 4931:2010. The best-performing briquette was obtained from a composition of 30% semi-coke and 60% EFB charcoal, using sago starch as a binder and a non-soaking activation method. This briquette had a moisture content of 8,2%, ash content of 15,7%, volatile matter of 22,5%, fixed carbon content of 53,6%, total sulfur of 0,08%, and a calorific value of 5465 cal/g.
