Abstract

White liquor is a chemical solution used in the wood cooking process in the pulp and paper industry, which can be recovered through causticizing process. This process involves the reaction between calcium hydroxide and sodium carbonate occured inside a causticizer tank at temperature range of 100–104°C. The quality of white liquor produced from this process often varies, generally due to different temperatures in the causticizer. This condition can impact the stability of the produced white liquor's quality. This study was conducted to determine the active alkali value, sulfidity, and causticizing efficiency as quality parameters of white liquor by examining different temperature conditions in the causticizer during the causticizing process. The study was carried out by direct measurement the quality of white liquor using acid-base titration methods to calculate the concentration of each compound, such as NaOH, Na₂S, and Na₂CO₃. The findings showed that temperatures below 100°C resulted in active alkali values <96 g/L, sulfidity <27%, and causticizing efficiency <75%, which do not meet standards. Conversely, at temperatures of 100–104°C, active alkali values of 96–115 g/L, sulfidity of 27–28%, and causticizing efficiency of 75–83% were obtained, indicating an optimal causticizing process and producing standard white liquor. From this research, it can be concluded that maintaining temperature stability in the causticizer is crucial in maintaining the quality of white liquor, which directly impacts the efficiency and overall paper production process.
