Abstract

Acid mine drainage (AMD) contains heavy metals Fe and Mn which can pollute waters. PT Bukit Asam Tbk processes AMD through Sludge Settlement Ponds (KPL), one of which is KPL AL 02 which processes AMD using phytoremediation techniques. This study has conducted monitoring of phytoremediation results in three sampling periods at KPL AL 02. AMD and sediment samples were taken from the inlet pond, compartment 5, compartment 6 and outlet pond. Rat purun samples were taken from compartment 5, compartment 6 and outlet pond. Parameters measured in AMD include pH, TSS, and concentration of Fe and Mn metals, while sediment and rat purun were measured for concentration of Fe and Mn metals. The results showed that the pH value ranged from 4.77-7.06, TSS 21.50-7910.5 mg/L, the concentration of Fe metal in AMD measured was 0.10-12.442 mg/L while Mn metal was 1.26-4.18 mg/L. The levels of Fe metal in sediment were 49.95-266.32 mg/kg and Mn was 1.26-27.634 mg/kg. Purun tikus plants accumulate higher Fe metal in the roots ranging from 70.18-462.01 ppm compared to the stems of 2.95-13.85 ppm, while Mn metal is higher in the stems with concentrations ranging from 3.81-54.07 ppm compared to the roots of 5.13-33.86 ppm. Purun tikus accumulates Fe and Mn metals through phytostabilization mechanisms (BCF>1, TF<1). Purun tikus plays an important role in the success of AAT processing even though the results tend to fluctuate due to environmental conditions such as rainfall, temperature, and metal availability.
