Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of mass and contact time of phytoremediation on increasing pH, reducing TSS, Fe, and Mn levels, and determining the effectiveness of coontail plants as phytoremediators in accumulating Fe and Mn heavy metals. Phytoremediation of acid mine drainage using coontail plants was carried out with 3 variations of coontail plant mass (30, 45, and 60 g) and 3 variations of contact time (7, 14, and 21 days) with two repetitions. Testing of pH values was carried out using a pH meter, TSS was analysed gravimetrically, and heavy metal levels (Fe and Mn) were analysed using AAS. The results of Kruskal-Wallis nonparametric analysis at the 5% level showed that the mass of coontail plant phytoremediation significantly affected pH, Fe, and Mn and not TSS, while contact time did not significantly affect pH, TSS, Fe and Mn. With the best mass and time the results were obtained at a mass of 60 g and contact time on day 7 for each parameter (except pH on day 14). The results of the calculation of the effectiveness of Fe and Mn metal absorption show that coontail plants are effective in reducing Fe and Mn metal levels with the highest effectiveness of Fe levels of 99.22% and Mn levels of 92.99% in the mass variation of 60 g and day 7 in the testing volume of 3 L of acid mine water.
