Abstract

Nickel nitride (Ni3N) metal catalyst has high potential in assisting the hydrocracking process of crude palm oil (CPO) into biofuel. This research was conducted to determine the effect of adding Ni metal to the SiO2-Al2O3 support on the catalyst characterization results for testing functional groups, crystallinity, composition, surface area and particle size, as well as testing the performance of the Ni3N/SiO2-Al2O3 catalyst for hydrocracking CPO into biofuel. Characterization was carried out using FTIR, XRD, XRF, SAA (BET), and PSA, and catalyst performance tests were carried out through GC-MS analysis. FTIR results show the presence of Si-O-Si and Al-O-Si functional groups. XRD shows a change in the amorphous structure of the support to crystalline with the appearance of typical NiO and Ni3N peaks. The nickel content increased to 8,47% after impregnation based on XRF analysis. The specific surface area decreased from 384 m²/g to 346,75 m²/g in the NiO phase and 345,70 m²/g in the Ni3N phase, while the particle size increased from 310,1 nm to 3276,0 nm in the NiO phase and 727,9 nm in the Ni3N phase. The GC-MS test shows the reaction temperature influences the product composition, with the dominant compounds at each temperature based on their retention time indicating biodiesel (250°C), biogasoline (300°C), and biogasoline (350°C). The highest selectivity percentage for the biogasoline fraction (C5–C11) was achieved at a temperature of 300°C of 70,39%, indicating this temperature is optimal for biogasoline production using a Ni3N catalyst with SiO2-Al2O3 support. Keywords : Ni3N, SiO2-Al2O3, CPO, Hydrocracking, Biofuel
