Abstract

Background: Epilepsy is a disease characterized by recurrent seizure caused by altered brain electrical activity. Anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs) are recognized to induce vitamin D catabolism, especially CYP450 enzyme inducer-type AED. Several studies have shown that patients taking enzyme inducer-type AEDs have significantly lower vitamin D levels Method: This study was an analytical cross-sectional study using secondary data from medical records of epilepsy patients who were treated at the Outpatient Department of Mohammad Hoesin Hospital, Palembang from September 1, 2023 to August 31, 2024. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analysis with the Chi Square test to evaluate the relationship between type of AED and vitamin D levels. Result: From 60 patients, 81.7% of them having vitamin D levels <30 ng/dL. There was a significant relationship between the type of AED and vitamin D levels (p value=0.000). Patients consumed enzyme inducer AEDs had 17.55-fold increased chance of having vitamin D levels <30 ng/dL (OR=17.55). Conclusion: Enzyme inducer-type of AEDs significantly increases the risk of epilepsy patients having vitamin D levels <30 ng/dL. This study emphasizes the importance of routine clinical evaluation to monitor changes in vitamin D levels and the importance of vitamin D supplementation in epilepsy patients consumed AEDs, especially enzyme inducer. Keywords: anti epileptic drug, vitamin D level, epilepsy.
