Abstract
The coastal waters of Sungsang, located at the estuary of the Musi River, are characterized by high anthropogenic activity and environmental pollution potential, including contamination by hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) gas. H₂S is a toxic compound formed through sulfate reduction by anaerobic bacteria, posing a serious threat to aquatic life, particularly under anaerobic and low pH conditions. This study aims to analyze and compare H₂S concentrations in sediment pore water between inhabited and uninhabited coastal areas of Sungsang, Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra. Pore water samples were collected from six stations using a purposive sampling method and analyzed by iodometric titration following SNI 6989.75-2009. The results showed that H₂S concentrations in inhabited areas were significantly higher (average 0.391 mg/L) than in uninhabited areas (average 0.0485 mg/L). An independent t-test confirmed a statistically significant difference between the two areas (p < 0.05). These findings indicate that human activities, such as domestic and industrial waste discharge, contribute to increased H₂S levels in coastal environments.
