Abstract

This study aims to explore the survival strategies adopted by rubber plantation laborer families in Rimba Ukur Village, Sekayu District, Musi Banyuasin Regency. Rimba Ukur is a transmigration village where most residents are migrants from Java who depend heavily on rubber plantations for their livelihoods. However, not all residents own land; many work as laborers, relying on daily or contract-based wages. These families face economic vulnerability due to volatile rubber prices, low educational attainment, and limited access to alternative employment. To cope with these challenges, they implement various survival strategies such as diversifying income sources, doing odd jobs, running small-scale businesses, and relying on social networks including mutual aid groups and community-based support systems. The patron-client relationship between landowners and laborers also plays a vital role in sustaining livelihoods. This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach through observation, interviews, and literature review. The findings indicate that strong community bonds and social solidarity serve as essential social capital in building economic resilience. This study contributes to the understanding of socio-economic dynamics in rural communities and provides valuable insights for developing more inclusive agricultural policies and empowering marginalized farming groups. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji strategi bertahan hidup yang dilakukan oleh keluarga buruh tani karet di Desa Rimba Ukur, Kecamatan Sekayu, Kabupaten Musi Banyuasin. Desa ini merupakan wilayah transmigrasi yang mayoritas penduduknya berasal dari Pulau Jawa dan menggantungkan hidup pada sektor perkebunan, terutama karet. Namun, tidak semua warga memiliki lahan sendiri. Sebagian besar menjadi buruh tani yang mengandalkan upah harian atau borongan di kebun milik orang lain. Ketergantungan terhadap harga pasar karet yang fluktuatif, rendahnya tingkat pendidikan, serta terbatasnya akses terhadap pekerjaan alternatif membuat posisi ekonomi keluarga buruh tani sangat rentan. Dalam menghadapi kondisi tersebut, mereka menerapkan berbagai strategi bertahan hidup, seperti diversifikasi sumber penghasilan, kerja serabutan, berdagang kecil-kecilan, serta memanfaatkan jaringan sosial seperti arisan dan gotong royong. Selain itu, relasi patron-klien antara pemilik kebun dan buruh tani juga memainkan peran penting dalam keberlangsungan hidup mereka. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif dengan teknik observasi, wawancara, dan studi pustaka. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kekuatan komunitas dan solidaritas sosial menjadi modal penting dalam membangun ketahanan ekonomi keluarga buruh tani. Temuan ini diharapkan dapat memberikan kontribusi dalam memahami dinamika sosial-ekonomi masyarakat pedesaan serta menjadi masukan bagi perumusan kebijakan pembangunan pertanian dan pemberdayaan petani kecil ke depan.
