Abstract

In the digital age, technology has become essential in shaping educational practices, particularly in language instruction. This study investigates the digital competence of English teachers at SMP Negeri 1 Palembang, aiming to understand how effectively they integrate digital tools into their teaching, the support provided by the school, and the challenges they face. Employing a qualitative case study design, data were gathered through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with five English teachers of varying professional experience. The findings revealed that the teachers, on average, demonstrated an “Integrator” level of digital competence, indicating a proficient yet improvable application of technology in teaching. Strengths were observed in learner empowerment and classroom engagement, while gaps remained in areas such as digital resource management, collaborative material development, and assessment strategies. The study also highlighted the school’s efforts in providing basic infrastructure and training but identified the need for more inclusive, flexible, and accessible professional development programs. This research underscores the importance of continuous digital training and infrastructure enhancement to foster effective teaching practices and improve student outcomes. The insights provided can inform policy and training initiatives tailored to the needs of junior secondary English teachers in similar educational settings.
