Abstract

Tanjung Carat is dominated by mangrove forests, which have the potential to become a significant source of biogenic hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in the atmosphere. Dissolved hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in water can affect water quality around the mangrove ecosystem. This study aims to measure the concentration of H2S, mangrove density, and the correlation between the two. Pore water samples were taken using a pore water sampler to analyze H2S levels, while water parameters were measured using a multiparameter device (HANNA instrument HI98196), a hand refractometer, and an ORP (Oxidation Reduction Potential) meter, with mangrove density assessed using a quadrat transect. The results showed that H2S levels at all stations exceeded the quality standards set by the Government Regulation of the Republic of Indonesia Number 22 of 2021, Appendix VIII for river and similar waters across classes 1, 2, and 3 (≤ 0.002 mg/L). According to the Ministry of Environment Decree (2004), stations 1, 2, and 6 were categorized as having moderate mangrove density and in good condition (≥1000 - ≥1500 ind/ha), while stations 3, 4, and 5 were categorized as having sparse mangrove density and in degraded condition (≥1000 ind/ha). H2S levels were higher in dense mangroves (average 0.0114 mgS^(⁻2)/L) compared to sparse mangroves (average 0.102 mgS^(⁻2)/L). Keywords : Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S), Mangrove, Density, Pore Water
