Abstract

Maspari Island, Ogan Komering Ilir Regency, South Sumatra, faces various environmental threats such as overfishing, marine pollution, climate change, as well as declining populations of turtles and several endangered species. This study aims to identify the ecosystem service components on Maspari Island, analyze the community’s perception levels regarding social, economic, and cultural aspects in coastal and marine spatial planning as a conservation area, and examine the relationship between the socio-economic and cultural characteristics of the community and the utilization of these ecosystem services. Data were collected through questionnaires and interviews with 96 respondents, consisting of local residents in Sungai Kong Hamlet and managers from the Ogan Komering Ilir Fisheries Department. The identification results revealed four main categories of ecosystem services: provisioning services (capture fisheries, timber, food, shelter), regulating services (abrasion control, seawater quality regulation, carbon sequestration), supporting services (nutrient provision, feeding grounds, nursery grounds), and cultural services (education, recreation, research). The community’s perception of coastal conservation was generally positive, with a belief that conservation can improve economic welfare and preserve cultural values. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed significant relationships between socio-economic characteristics (age, education, occupation, gender) and the utilization of ecosystem services. This study emphasizes the importance of involving local communities and managers in conservation area management to ensure ecosystem sustainability and socio-economic and cultural welfare.
