Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effect of variations in radial clearance on the contact mechanics characteristics and temperature due to friction in zirconia (ZrO₂-ZrO₂) ceramic hip joint implants. Radial clearance is an important geometric parameter that directly influences lubrication efficiency, pressure distribution, and wear rate. Improper clearance values can lead to increased friction over time. Therefore, this study was conducted numerically using the finite element method (FEM) in ABAQUS/CAE software, varying the radial clearance from 0.03 mm to 0.3 mm. The simulation model includes symmetric geometry between the femoral head and acetabular cup, subjected to normal walking load over a full gait cycle. Analyzed parameters include maximum contact pressure, deformation distribution, von Mises and Tresca stresses, as well as temperature generated by friction between bearing surfaces. Simulation results show that increasing radial clearance causes an increase in contact pressure and surface deformation, resulting in higher internal stresses and greater risk of material failure. The highest von Mises and Tresca stresses were observed at a clearance of 0.3 mm, approaching the yield limit of ZrO₂ material. Furthermore, the temperature distribution due to friction indicates a significant temperature rise at the largest clearance, which could potentially damage the biological tissue surrounding the implant. Conversely, excessively small clearance reduces pressure and temperature but risks lowering lubrication efficiency and increasing localized wear. Based on these results, it can be concluded that selecting an appropriate radial clearance is a key factor in the design of ceramic hip implants. This study provides an important foundation for the development of durable and biomechanically and safe implant designs.
