Abstract

This research is motivated by the development of a box-type drying machine; however, the optimal biomass fuel feed rate has not yet been determined. This study aims to evaluate the performance of a box-type rice drying machine using palm shell fuel with varying fuel feed rates. The research was conducted at the Machinery Soil and Water Engineering Laboratory, Agricultural Engineering Study Program, Department of Agricultural Technology, Sriwijaya University, using an experimental method with descriptive data presentation. The research results are presented in the form of graphs and tables. At a biomass fuel feed rate of 0.5 kg/hour, the average drying chamber temperature reached 30.7 °C, reducing the moisture content to 14.0% over a drying duration of 150 minutes, with a drying rate of 4.0 %wb/hour, a drying energy requirement of 687,53 kJ/kg, and a drying efficiency of 2.97%. At a feed rate of 1.0 kg/hour, the average temperature increased to 33 °C, lowering the moisture content to 13.4% in 120 minutes, with a drying rate of 5.11 %wb/hour, an energy requirement of 704,13 kJ/kg, and an efficiency of 3,31 %. At a feed rate of 1.5 kg/hour, the average temperature reached 34 °C, with the moisture content reduced to 13.2% in 60 minutes, a drying rate of 10.47 %wb/hour, an energy requirement of 723,07 kJ/kg, and an efficiency of 4.90%. These findings indicate that a higher fuel feed rate leads to a lower final moisture content, while simultaneously increasing the drying temperature, drying rate, energy consumption, and drying efficiency.
