Abstract

Fiddler crabs (Uca spp.) play an important role in maintaining ecosystem balance through their function as detritivores and keystone species. The Musi River Estuary, South Sumatra, is the downstream area where the Musi River flows from its upstream region. This estuary is affected by various activities such as agriculture, aquaculture, transportation, and human settlements. These activities can lead to a decline in water quality in the Musi River Estuary and affect the surrounding mangrove ecosystem. This study aims to identify the species, abundance, and community structure of fiddler crabs and to analyze the relationship between their abundance and water parameters in the Musi River Estuary, South Sumatra. The results of this study identified four species of fiddler crabs: Uca forcipata, Uca tetragonon, Uca triangularis, and Uca dussumieri. The abundance values ranged from 4.40 ind/m² to 10.60 ind/m², the diversity index ranged from 0.29 – 0.83, the evenness index ranged from 0.41 – 0.98, and the dominance index ranged from 0.48 – 0.85. The variation in these values is thought to be influenced by environmental factors such as environmental parameters, substrate type, dominant species, and human activities around the study site.
