Abstract

Musi Rawas Regency is one of the main palm oil-producing regions in South Sumatra Province and serves as the operational base for several multinational palm oil companies. In 2022–2023, a significant land expansion of approximately 19,000 hectares was recorded, predominantly driven by eight multinational corporations. This study aims to analyze the contribution of multinational palm oil companies' expansion to the social, economic, and environmental dimensions in Musi Rawas, using the theoretical framework of the Social Ecological Market Economy (SEME). This research employs a qualitative descriptive method and relies on secondary data as well as in-depth interviews. The findings indicate that the contribution of expansion to the aspects of Welfare for All and Environmental Compatibility remains limited and tends to be unequal, as shown by high unemployment and poverty rates, along with increasing deforestation. However, field findings from interviews with local residents suggest that in certain areas, such as Petunang Village, companies like PT Evans Lestari have provided positive impacts, including increased employment, income, and compliance with environmental regulations. Nevertheless, it can be concluded that the overall expansion of multinational palm oil plantations in Musi Rawas has not yet fully reflected the principles of social, economic, and environmental justice as defined by the SEME framework.
