Abstract

Paddy is a paddy-producing crop which is a very important commodity for Indonesia. In addition to paddy as a staple food producer, paddy commodities are also the main source of income for millions of farmers. And also paddy is not only important as a food commodity, but also important as an economic, cultural, strategic, and political commodity. This study aims to: (1) examine farmers’ perceptions of climate change, and (2) analyze the differences in paddy production and income under normal weather conditions and during La Niña events in Sungai Rebo Village, Banyuasin Regency. The research was conducted in March 2025 using a survey method and a descriptive quantitative approach. A total of 30 paddy farmers were selected using simple random sampling. The results indicate that farmers have a very high level of awareness regarding the causes, impacts, and importance of adaptation and mitigation in response to climate change. During La Niña, heavy rainfall caused widespread flooding, significantly reducing Paddy yields and leading to a drastic decrease in farmers’ income. Income dropped by up to 80% or approximately Rp8,305,195 per hectare per growing season compared to normal rainfall conditions. A paired sample t-test produced a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), confirming a statistically significant difference in income between the two climate conditions. These findings highlight the need for adaptive strategies to climate variability, including changes in planting patterns, the use of flood-tolerant paddy varieties, and the implementation of mina paddy systems (paddy-fish farming integration). Such strategies can help increase the resilience and economic sustainability of paddy farmers, particularly those cultivating in tidal swamp areas. Keywords: Climate Change, Paddy farming, Farmer Income, La Niña, Perception, Adaptation, Non Tidal Swamp.
