Abstract

Bandotan leaves (Ageratum conyzoides L.) contain flavonoid and tannin compounds that act as hemostatic agents. This study aims to determine the most optimal hemostasis effect of varying doses of ethanol extract of bandotan leaves on male mice (Mus musculus). This study used five groups of male mice as samples which were divided into negative control group (NaCMC), positive control (tranexamic acid), and three treatment groups with bandotan leaf ethanol extract doses of 100 mg/kgBB, 150 mg/kgBB, and 250 mg/kgBB given orally for 7 days. Hemostasis parameters were measured using bleeding time with the duke method and clotting time with the slide method observed on day 0 and day 8 of the test. The results showed that ethanol extract of bandotan leaves can accelerate the hemostasis effect significantly (p>0.05) with a dose of 250 mg/kgBB showing effectiveness close to the positive control. The hemostasis mechanism of the extract is related to the flavonoid content that can help the platelet blockage process and has a vasoconstrictive mechanism and tannins have properties as astringents that stop bleeding by precipitating blood proteins. This study shows that ethanol extract of bandotan leaves can be used to accelerate the effect of hemostasis.
