Abstract

The Musi River Estuary is an estuarine water area that plays an important role in fisheries but is vulnerable to pollution, including microplastics. Microplastic pollution can occur due to low public awareness. Microplastics are plastic particles smaller than 5 mm that can accumulate in fish bodies. This study aims to identify the types and sizes of microplastics, analyze their abundance, and assess the microplastic pollution load in Sea Catfish (Hemibagrus nemurus) in the Musi River Estuary. A total of 15 catfish specimens were classified by body size (small, medium, large) and analyzed for microplastics in their gastrointestinal tracts and gills. The results showed that microplastics were found in all samples, including fragments, films, fibers, and pellets. The highest abundance was found in the gastrointestinal tracts of large-sized fish (6.4 particles/individual), while the lowest was in the gills of medium-sized fish (3.6 particles/individual). The size range of the microplastics was 100–5000 µm, with polystyrene identified as the dominant polymer using FTIR analysis. The Pollution Load Index (PLI) values indicated that all fish samples were contaminated with microplastics at a moderate pollution level. These findings indicate that microplastics have polluted the Musi River Estuary ecosystem.
