Abstract

Cloves (Syzygium aromaticum) are Indonesian spice plants that have been used in the traditional medicine industry. The main component and active ingredient in clove oil is eugenol (C10H12O2). The most eugenol content are found in flowers, with eugenol levels between 78-95%, has a clear color to pale yellow, consistency like oil and has antibacterial activity. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of rinsing with 0,5% of boiled clove flower water (Syzygium aromaticum) on dental plaque score in 14-years-old children. The research was a quasi-experimental study with pretest-posttest control group design. Sixty respondents were divided into 2 groups, group 1 rinsing with 0,5% of boiled clove flower water and group 2 rinsing with chlorhexidine 0.12%. The plaque score was measured using Gilmore Glickman's Turesky modified plaque index from Quigley Hein, before and after rinsing. Data were analyzed using dependent t-test and independent t-test. The results showed that the plaque score after rinsing with 0.5% of boiled clove flower water and 0.12% chlorhexidine were not significantly different at p=0.19 (p>0.05). The conclusion of this study is that rinsing with 0.5% of boiled clove flower water is able to reduce dental plaque in 14-years-old children.
