Abstract

Background:Color blindness, acolor visiondisorderthat is related to inability to distinguish colors,isan X-linked recessive disorderthatattacks 8% males and0.5% females around the world. Color blindnessinvolvesretina, especiallycone cellswhich responsible forcolor vision. This studyobjective is to determineprevalenceandfamilyhistory ofcolor blindnessinthehigh school studentsin the districtof WestIlirIIPalembangin 2015. Methods: This study usedobservationaldescriptivesurvey method.The population is all of the students in the high school in the district of West Ilir II Palembang. Sampelsis 334 studentsclass X in the high school in the district of West Ilir II Palembang. Variable includes color blindness prevalence, sex, and family history which are father, mother, brothers and sisters. The case is identified with Ishihara book.. Results: The results obtained from the studyofhigh school students class Xin the district of West Ilir IIPalembang were4,19% color blind. From male, 7.36% of malewas color blind and from female was 1.17% had color blind. The color blind male students 41,67% have color blind brothers and 8,33% have color blind sisters. The color blind female students didn’t have any color blind family history. Conclusion: Color blind prevalence in the high school students in the district of West Ilir II Palembang were 4,19%.Color blindness could be found more often in male than female. Color blind siblings , either brothers or sisters, indicated family history of color blindness.
