Abstract

Continuous and uncontrolled human activities (anthropogenic) can trigger pollution, including hydrogen sulfide (H2S) pollution. Increasing water depth leads to a decrease in dissolved oxygen (DO) and an increase in H2S levels. This study aims to analyze DO and H2S concentrations and their relationship based on water depth. Water samples were collected using a water sampler for H2S concentration analysis and water parameter measurements. The concentration of H2S was analyzed using the iodometric titration method. The results showed that the average DO concentration at the surface layer (0.2d) was 6.6 mg/L, with an H2S level of 0.007 mg/L. At the middle layer (0.5d), DO was recorded at 6.2 mg/L with an H2S concentration of 0.254 mg/L. Meanwhile, at the bottom layer (0.8d), DO was 5.6 mg/L and H2S concentration reached 0.320 mg/L. There was a strong correlation between depth, DO, and H2S levels. As depth increases, DO tends to decrease while H2S levels increase. Moreover, there is a strong negative correlation between DO and H2S, indicating that higher dissolved oxygen tends to reduce H2S levels. According to Government Regulation No. 22 of 2021, the H2S concentration in this water body exceeds the water quality standard (0.002 mg/L). However, based on the Ministry of Environment Regulation No. 03 of 2010, the levels are still below the industrial wastewater quality standard (1 mg/L).
