Abstract

This study aims to analyze the feasibility of cultivating Gracilaria verrucosa seaweed in traditional ponds in Marga Sungsang Village, Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra. The research addresses the issue of declining fish catches during the dry season and the need for alternative livelihoods. A descriptive method was employed, focusing on water quality parameters including salinity, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), nitrate, and phosphate, alongside analysis of seaweed growth through Daily Growth Rate (DGR), Weekly Growth Rate (WGR), and Absolute Growth Rate (AGR). The results show that while most water quality parameters were within the optimal range for G. verrucosa growth, salinity levels were notably low (average 7.4 ppt), likely due to high rainfall. The highest daily growth rate recorded was only 0.11%, well below the optimal standard of >3%, and both weekly and absolute growth rates showed fluctuating trends with a decline after the second week. These findings indicate that although environmental factors such as temperature and nutrients are supportive, low salinity significantly hampers seaweed productivity. In conclusion, the cultivation of G. verrucosa in traditional ponds in Marga Sungsang has potential as an alternative livelihood for the local community but requires better salinity to achieve optimal production levels.
