Abstract

Background: Slow learner children are children with special needs with IQ 65-80. The population of slow learner children is 14% of all children with special needs and 80% of them have poor oral and dental hygiene due to lack of understanding of proper teeth brushing procedures and provision of education that is not in accordance with their abilities. Purpose: to find out the effect of counseling on tooth brushing using puppet media on slow learner plaque scores. Method: this research a quasy experimental with pretest-posttest control group design. The sample consisted of 40 slow learner children who were divided into two groups, which are 20 children (treatment group) were given counseling to brush their teeth using the media of tooth puppets and 20 children (control group) were given counseling to brush their teeth without media. Plaque scores of the two samples were measured before (pretest) and after (posttest) counseling was done using turesky modification metod. The analysis of the average pretest and posttest scores of the two groups was carried out by t-dependent, whereas analasis compared the scores of the treatment group and the control group using t-independent. Results: there was a significant difference between the the average value of the treatment group and the control group with a value of p = 0,035 (p <0,050). Conclusion: Counseling how to brush your teeth using a tooth puppet is more effective in decreasing plaque scores in slow learner children at YPAC Palembang compared to without a tooth puppet
