Abstract

Background: According to Riskesdas 2018, malocclusion was the third most common oral and dental condition in Indonesia, with a prevalence of 80%. The highest incidence was found among children aged 12–15 years (15.6%). One of the methods used to treat malocclusion was the use of fixed orthodontic appliances. A total of 81.50% of adolescents were users of fixed orthodontic appliances. However, their use was not always intended to align the teeth, but was also influenced by perceptions of appearance as part of a trend or lifestyle. Objective: To determine the perception of fixed orthodontic treatment among tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 10 Palembang. Methods: This observational study employed a questionnaire consisting of 17 items distributed via Google Forms to a sample of 432 students. Results: A total of 363 students (84.02%) showed a moderate level of perception, influenced by the high cost of treatment and a lack of understanding regarding the competence of the operator. Conclusion: The high cost of orthodontic treatment, which poses an economic burden, along with the perception that there is no significant difference in treatment outcomes between operators, are key factors hindering the development of a positive perception of fixed orthodontic care.
