Abstract
Motor vehicle is the main contributor to air pollution, with approximately 96.38% consisting of carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide gas that enters the respiratory system can interfere with the blood's ability to bind oxygen, thereby triggering respiratory complaints. Parking attendants are a vulnerable group because they often work in areas with potential exposure to carbon monoxide. The objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between carbon monoxide exposure and subjective respiratory complaints among parking attendants at Palembang City Market. This is a quantitative study with a cross-sectional design, involving 83 parking attendants at Palembang City Market using total sampling technique. Data collection was conducted through questionnaire completion via interviews and direct measurement of carbon monoxide concentration using a carbon monoxide meter at 26 sampling points. Data analysis included univariate analysis, chi-square tests for bivariate analysis, and multivariate analysis using a multiple logistic regression risk factor model. Bivariate analysis results showed a relationship between carbon monoxide gas concentration (p-value = 0.006), work duration (p-value = 0.022), and smoking habits (p-value = 0.019) with subjective respiratory complaints among parking attendants at Palembang City Market, while the variables that were not related were work tenure (p-value = 0.789) and mask use (p-value = 0.668). The results of the multivariate analysis showed that the risk factor for subjective respiratory complaints among parking attendants at Palembang City Market was carbon monoxide gas concentration after controlling for work duration and smoking habits (p-value = 0.040; PR 2.900; 95% CI = 1.049–8.054). The conclusion of this study is that the most significant risk factor for subjective respiratory complaints among parking attendants at Palembang City Market is carbon monoxide concentration. Therefore, parking attendants are advised to use masks with a thickness of two layers.
