Abstract

Water pollution in the Penjemuran River in Palembang City is caused by leachate from the Sukawinatan Final Disposal Site (TPA), leading to a decline in water quality that threatens the community's aquaculture activities. This study aims to develop a subsurface flow (SSF) constructed wetland system on both laboratory and field scales and to analyze the effect of substrate variations (sand, gravel, and charcoal) on pollutant removal efficiency. Experiments were conducted using two CW tanks sized 70×35×45 cm, with water jasmine (Echinodorus palaefolius) used as a phytoremediation agent. The tested parameters included TSS, H₂S, salinity, and pH. Results showed that Tank 1 was more effective than Tank 2, with pollutant removal efficiencies in Tank 1 reaching 60.06% for TSS and 80% for H₂S using sand and gravel substrates. Although salinity increased by 17.39%, the value remained within the class II water quality standard. The pH value increased to the optimal range (6.16–6.45). Based on these results, the SSF-type CW system proved effective in reducing key pollutants and is feasible for field-scale application. A cost estimation for field-scale construction was also conducted to support implementation considerations. This study serves as a reference for the use of constructed wetlands as a sustainable solution to improve the water quality of the Penjemuran River and support the sustainability of the aquaculture sector.
