Abstract

Musa paradisiaca banana is a plant that is widely cultivated in Indonesia. Bananas are widely planted by the community because the fruit is sweet and has many benefits ranging from the fruit, stem, and leaves. Banana cultivation has various obstacles due to symptoms of pests and diseases. Banana Bunchy Top Virus (BBTV) disease or dwarf disease which is an important disease in banana plants. BBTV disease is transmitted by the vector P. nigronervosa called aphids. Aphids transmit BBTV through their mouthparts that pierce, suck and leave the virus in the host plant. Around the banana plant, plants from the Araceae and Zingiberaceae families were found which are alternative host plants for P. nigronervosa aphids. The study aims to determine the biology of P. nigronervosa in Bogor taro plants. The study was conducted in the laboratory and experimental garden of the Department of Plant Pests and Diseases, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University. The study was conducted from July to December 2021. The results of the laboratory study showed that a P. nigronervosa aphid could grow and develop on Bogor taro plants and produce offspring ranging from 11-40 or an average of 25.3. The results of the field study showed that the transmission of BBTV by P. nigronervosa aphids did not experience a decrease in efficiency after being passed on Bogor taro plants.
