Abstract

Background: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) was the most common form of oral cancer, accounting for nearly 90% of all carcinoma cases in the oral cavity. OSCC frequently occurred in both developing and developed countries. Epidemiological studies on OSCC in Indonesia remained limited. RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang was a type A referral hospital and the main teaching hospital of the Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University. Objective: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of OSCC at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang during the 2020–2024 period. Methods: This was a descriptive study with a cross-sectional design. conducted from 20 March to 25 April 2025 RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Samples were collected using purposive sampling techniques and analyzed using SPSS version 25. Results: A total of 70 OSCC patient samples met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. OSCC patients were predominantly female (54.3%). Most patients were between 15–64 years old (82.9%), with the most common tumor location being the tongue (58.6%). The most frequently administered treatment was nonsurgical (41.4%), and the most common histopathological finding was well-differentiated carcinoma (58.6%). Conclusion: The prevalence of OSCC at RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang was higher among females and within the productive age group. OSCC was most frequently located on the tongue, and the majority of patients received nonsurgical treatment, and had well-differentiated histopathological results.
