Abstract
River water pollution is a serious environmental problem in Indonesia, especially due to eutrophication caused by excess nutrients such as ammonia. This study aims to create a biofilter that can improve the content of ammonia, nitrite, and water quality parameters, analyze the role of biofiltration in explaining changes in ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate content, and their effect on water quality parameters, and identify the types of bacteria that are able to decompose ammonia and nitrite from the downstream Musi Sungsai water. The research was conducted at six stations in Palembang and Banyuasin, South Sumatra. Methods included measurement of water quality parameters (DO, temperature, pH, salinity, odor, taste, suspended residue, color, and turbidity) and implementation of a biofiltration system. The biofilter consists of physical filtration using activated carbon, anthracite, ferrolite, silica sand, and zeolite, followed by micro filtration and UV irradiation, and biological process with bacterial isolates for 14 days in an aeration system. Bacteria were isolated from PUSRI Station, which has high ammonia levels. Results showed that biofiltration resulted in a 68.92% reduction in ammonia. Post-biofiltration nitrite content was below 0.063 mg/L. The best bacteria combination (C2) resulted in a decrease in pH from 8.1 to 6.5 and an increase in DO from 5.4 to 9.42 mg/L. Molecular identification showed the ammonia-degrading bacteria as Klebsiella pneumoniae and the nitrite-degrading bacteria as Bacillus cereus.
