Abstract

Emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) are prevalent mental health issues among adolescents, particularly in those with obesity. Obesity affects not only physical health but also has potential psychosocial consequences. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of EBD among obese adolescents and analyze associated risk factors, including metabolic parameters and lifestyle. This was an observational analytic study using a cross-sectional design involving 339 adolescents aged 14–18 years from two public high schools in Palembang, Indonesia. Data were collected using the SDQ questionnaire, lifestyle screening, and laboratory tests for blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, cholesterol, and serum cortisol levels. Statistical analyses included chi-square and and Fisher's exact test with statistical significance level set at p < 0.05. The prevalence of obesity was 29.2%, while EBD prevalence among all adolescents was 85%, and 79.5% among obese adolescents. No statistically significant relationship was found between obesity and EBD (p = 0.972). Other variables such as gender, age, parental education, socioeconomic status, physical activity, dietary habits, blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, and cortisol levels also showed no significant association. The prevalence of emotional and behavioral problems among adolescents is high, regardless of obesity status. No significant association was found between obesity and EBD, possibly influenced by psychosocial variables and limited sample size in the obese non-EBD group.
