Abstract

The Banyuasin waters constitute the largest aquatic area in South Sumatra. The high diversity of fish species has driven local communities to engage in fishing activities, particularly targeting demersal fish using scoop nets (sondong). The distribution of demersal fish on the aquatic substrate is closely associated with the organic matter content, as their primary feeding grounds are located on the seafloor. The purpose of this study is to determine the organic matter deposits in the fishing ground area and their relationship with the catch of fish using scoop nets in the Banyuasin waters. This research was conducted in August 2023. Primary data were obtained through a survey of fish catches during fishing activities (oneday trip) carried out with local fishermen. The sampling was conducted through several hauling operations, with each haul assumed to represent one station, and a total of seven hauls were performed. The results of this study indicate that the catch obtained using scoop nets in the Banyuasin waters comprised six phyla, with an average abundance of 447,692 individuals per square kilometer. Metapenaeus brevicornis exhibited the highest abundance among the species captured. The fishing ground area was predominantly composed of sandy clay, with organic matter content ranging from 1.90% to 6.48%. The average organic matter content in the fishing ground area was 4.20%
