Abstract
Stunting is a chronic public health issue that has become both a national and global priority due to its long-term impact on children’s physical growth and cognitive development. Musi Banyuasin Regency recorded a decline in stunting prevalence from 23.04% (2019) to 17.07% (2023), although it remains above the national target. This study aims to map the incidence of stunting based on indirect variables: clean water coverage, access to proper sanitation, household smoking behavior, and poverty rate. This ecological study employs a descriptive quantitative approach using secondary data from the Health Office of Musi Banyuasin. Spatial analysis was conducted using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) through overlay and buffering techniques. The results show that 26 out of 29 public health center (PHC) working areas are in the very low category (<2.5%), while the remaining three (Suka Jaya, Bukit Selabu, and Sidorahayu) fall into the low category (2.5%–<10%). The spatial analysis revealed limited PHC coverage within a 3 km and 5 km radius and overlapping service areas among PHCs, along with inconsistencies between stunting prevalence and the distribution of clean water access, sanitation facilities, and poverty in several regions. Although household smoking prevalence was high in most areas, it did not consistently correlate with stunting rates. This study concludes that environmental and socioeconomic factors—such as clean water access, proper sanitation, smoking habits within households, and poverty—are key determinants of stunting. GIS-based spatial analysis is proven effective in identifying risk clusters and service overlaps, making it a valuable tool for formulating more targeted and sensitive intervention policies. Therefore, strengthening area-based interventions through improved water infrastructure, environmental health education, and community economic empowerment is essential to accelerate sustainable stunting reduction.
