Abstract

This study focuses on comparing the process of making dissolving pulp from paper grade wood pulp Eucalyptus pellita raw materials. The dissolving pulp process is carried out using the cold caustic extraction (CCE) and mechanical + CCE methods. The dissolving pulp process was carried out by calculating the moisture content of the raw material (8.81%) and the consistency of the pulp in the mixture with water and NaOH adjusted to 10%, so that the sample weight (AD) that had to be weighed (32 g) was obtained. The average quality of the raw materials used in this study were α-cellulose value (92.155%), brightness (89.5% ISO), viscosity (10.93 cP), intrinsic viscosity (584.115 mL/g). In this study, the optimum conditions obtained in the process of making dissolving pulp from paper grade Eucalyptus pellita wood pulp were the use of the cold caustic extraction method with a percentage of sodium hydroxide added of 10%, where the values obtained were yield (97.67%), α-cellulose (94.24%), viscosity (10.07 cP), intrinsic viscosity (549.83 mL/g), and brightness (90.2% ISO). The quality value has met the quality standards for dissolving pulp products based on SNI 938:2017.
