Abstract

Hypertension is one of the non-communicable diseases that is the leading cause of death in Indonesia and worldwide. Nurses, as healthcare workers, have a high risk of developing hypertension due to high job demands, low physical activity, and prolonged work-related stress. This study aims to investigate the relationship between physical activity and work-related stress on the incidence of hypertension among nurses at Siti Fatimah General Hospital in Palembang in 2025. This study employed a quantitative design with a cross-sectional study design, involving a sample size of 109 nurses in the inpatient and outpatient departments. Among them, 99 (90.8%) were under 36 years of age, 83 (76.1%) were female, and 81 (74.3%) worked in the inpatient department. The results showed that 61 (56%) nurses had low levels of physical activity and 55 (50.5%) nurses had low levels of work-related stress. The study found that the majority of respondents 89 81.7%) did not have a history of hypertension. Based on the results of the bivariate analysis, it was found that there is a significant relationship between the level of Nurses with low physical activity having 2.59 times greater odds of experiencing hypertension compared to those with high physical activity, thus physical activity plays a role as a protective factor against the occurrence of hypertension (p = 0.042; PR = 2.590; 95% CI = 1.058–6.338). In addition, work stress also showed a significant relationship with the incidence of hypertension, where Nurses with high work stress had 2.75 times greater odds of experiencing hypertension compared to nurses with low work stress. This indicates that work stress is a significant risk factor that can increase the likelihood of hypertension. hypertension compared to nurses with low levels of work-related stress (p = 0.034; PR = 2.750; 95% CI = 1.077–7.017). Nurses are advised to regularly engage in physical activity, manage stress, and monitor blood pressure periodically. It is also important for nurses to get adequate rest to avoid fatigue and manage work-related stress in order to reduce the risk of hypertension
