Abstract
Malaria remains a public health concern in endemic areas such as Lawang Kidul Subdistrict, Muara Enim Regency. In addition to environmental factors, individual behavior and knowledge play a crucial role in determining the risk of malaria transmission. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between behavioral factors, environmental conditions, and individual characteristics with the incidence of malaria among workers in Lawang Kidul Subdistrict during the period 2018–2022. A case-control study design with a quantitative approach was employed. The sample consisted of 114 respondents, comprising 57 cases (those who had contracted malaria) and 57 controls (those who had never contracted malaria). Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using chi-square tests for bivariate analysis and logistic regression for multivariate analysis. The results indicated that knowledge level was significantly associated with malaria incidence. Respondents with low knowledge had a 2.54 times higher risk of contracting malaria (OR = 2.537; 95% CI: 1.108–5.806; p = 0.042), and this association remained significant in the multivariate model (OR = 2.907; 95% CI: 1.191–7.093; p = 0.021). Most behavioral and environmental variables did not show a statistically significant association, including the use of bed nets (p = 0.693), protective clothing (p = 0.261), repellents (p = 1.000), and the habit of hanging clothes (p = 1.000). Demographic factors such as age, education level, work duration, and years of service were also not significant (p > 0.05). Distance to swamps showed a potential protective effect (OR = 0.389; p = 0.058), although it did not reach statistical significance. Low knowledge was identified as a significant risk factor for malaria incidence. Therefore, strengthening community education should be prioritized as part of effective prevention strategies, while behavioral and environmental interventions remain essential areas for further investigation.
