Abstract
Energy resources are an important factor in the socioeconomic development of a country. The use of fossil fuels as the main source of energy currently has a negative impact on the environment, particularly through carbon dioxide emissions. Therefore, environmentally friendly and sustainable energy alternatives, such as biodiesel, are needed. This study examines the potential for producing biodiesel from lemuru fish oil, obtained from fish processing waste, using a heterogeneous basic catalyst (CaO) derived from blood clam shell waste (Anadara granosa). The biodiesel production process involves an esterification stage to reduce the free fatty acid content of the lemuru fish oil, followed by transesterification using the CaO catalyst. Sampling was conducted in Sungsang Village, South Sumatra, and Bandung, West Java, with production carried out at the Marine Bioecology Laboratory of Sriwijaya University and product testing at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). Analysis results showed the presence of major fatty acids such as oleic acid, lactic acid, and palmitic acid, which support biodiesel quality. The optimal process occurred at a temperature of 64°C, a methanol:oil molar ratio of 12:1, and the use of a catalyst at 2% of the oil weight. The resulting biodiesel meets Indonesian national standards (SNI 7182:2015) and has the potential as a sustainable renewable energy source. This study makes an important contribution to the development of marine waste-based biodiesel as a clean energy alternative in Indonesia.
