Abstract

A lightning location system (LLS) is designed to determine the location or estimate of lightning strikes more accurately. This is essential for mapping areas with high lightning strike intensity, which can serve as a reference for determining protection on specific objects and minimizing losses to both inanimate objects and living beings. This study aims to test the consistency of the interferometry system at the Universitas Sriwijaya lightning station with previous research results using the MATLAB-based interferometry program developed in earlier studies. In addition, this study seeks to improve lightning mapping by visualizing lightning strike data to obtain the distribution of azimuth and elevation angles. The interferometry system employs three VHF antennas labeled B, C, and D and one fast-field antenna to capture radio frequency emissions from lightning. The system is installed on the rooftop of the Graha PTBA building at Universitas Sriwijaya, with antennas spaced 10 meters apart at 90° orientations. MATLAB software was used to calculate the azimuth and elevation angles through cross-correlation techniques by measuring the time differences between antennas B and C, and B and D. The signals were further processed using a windowing technique to accelerate data processing while maintaining high accuracy, with a window size of 131,072 samples and an overlap of 1,024 samples after prior upsampling. The results show that the system successfully mapped the azimuth and elevation angles of eight lightning events from April to June 2025, allowing observation of lightning movement. These results provide an important foundation for further research in accurately determining the geographic location of lightning strikes. Future research is recommended to develop a distributed network of interferometry stations to enable multilateration techniques, allowing lightning strike coordinates to be determined more precisely.
