Abstract

Malaria remains a persistent global health concern, particularly in mining regions such as Muara Enim, South Sumatra, which has previously been classified as an endemic area due to environmental conditions conducive to the growth of Anopheles spp. mosquitoes. This study investigates factors associated with malaria incidence among workers in the Lawang Kidul mining area of Muara Enim Regency. A quantitative approach incorporating spatial analysis was employed using a case-control design, with 115 respondents selected through purposive sampling. Bivariate analysis using the chi-square test revealed significant associations between malaria incidence and work duration (p = 0.016), knowledge (p < 0.001), the habit of hanging clothes (p = 0.007), wearing revealing clothing (p = 0.031), use of repellents (p = 0.011), and residential proximity to swamps (p = 0.020) and vegetation (p = 0.020). Multivariable analysis identified knowledge as the most influential factor (p < 0.001). These findings highlight the critical role of individual behavior and environmental proximity in malaria transmission. Preventive strategies should emphasize environmental sanitation, consistent use of personal protective equipment, and strengthened health education to reduce vulnerability among mining workers in endemic areas.
