Abstract

This research aims to explore a social phenomenon by examining the communication experiences of tuberculosis (TB) survivors in confronting negative stigma and its implications for self-meaning and mental health. The study is grounded in Alfred Schutz’s phenomenological framework, particularly the concept of intersubjectivity, including two key idealizations: the interchangeability of viewpoints and the congruence of systems of relevances. Data were collected through observation and in-depth interviews. The findings indicate that TB survivors often experience social stigma in the form of discrimination and stereotyping in their daily lives, originating from both their communities and family environments. This study offers a deeper understanding of how social stigma shapes the survivors’ self-perception and psychological well-being. The findings are expected to inform the development of psychosocial support programs tailored to the needs of TB survivors.
