Abstract

Banyuasin waters, an estuarine area, possess high potential in supporting benthic biota and demersal fish. The ecological relationship between these two components is crucial in the aquatic food web. This study aimed to analyze the correlation between abiotic parameters, benthic biota, and demersal fish abundance using scoop nets (sondong) in Banyuasin waters. Benthic biota plays a vital role as a food source for demersal fish and is significantly influenced by abiotic factors. Oceanographic parameter measurements generally indicated water conditions that met quality standards. The research period coincided with a lean season, which affected the catch. Benthic biota characteristics were dominated by Crustacea (99.81%), especially TB shrimp (Metapenaeus monoceros), indicating a productive but unbalanced community with low diversity. Analysis of demersal fish stomach contents confirmed a benthic carnivorous diet, with shrimp and crab claws as primary food sources. The scoop net catches comprised 36 species with a total of 3,549 individuals and an abundance of 2,535,000 ind/km². Although the main catch was dominated by TB shrimp, the proportion of bycatch (Johnius carouna) and discards (jellyfish, hermit crabs) was considerably high, indicating low fishing gear selectivity. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed a positive correlation between dissolved oxygen (DO) and current with the abundance and diversity of demersal fish and benthic biota. Conversely, high temperature and salinity tended to correlate negatively with diversity and species dominance. Benthic biota abundance was proven to be directly correlated with demersal fish abundance as a primary food source.
