Abstract

The analysis of the effect of ethanol addition on the quality of RON 92 gasoline in achieving RON 98 gasoline specifications had been conducted at the laboratory of PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional RU III. This study aimed to produce RON 98 gasoline by blending ethanol into RON 92 gasoline. RON 92 gasoline, commonly known as Pertamax, is obtained by mixing 92% HOMC and 8% LOMC components. In this research, RON 92 gasoline samples were blended with ethanol in varying volumes of 10, 15, and 20%, and analyzed using ASTM methods in accordance with RON 98 gasoline specifications. The results showed that ethanol addition to RON 92 gasoline significantly increased octane number, oxidation stability, and density, while reducing sulfur, olefin, aromatic content, vapor pressure, and corrosion potential. The optimum formulation was achieved with the addition of 20% ethanol (v/v), as it provided the most favorable results, including RON 99, sulfur content of 0.0017% v/v, olefin 11.388% v/v, aromatic 18.926% v/v, unwashed gum 2.2 mg/100 mL, washed gum 2.4 mg/100 mL, vapor pressure 57.5 kPa, density 759 kg/m³, copper strip corrosion rating of 1b, and distillation at 10, 50, and 90% recovery, as well as end point, were 58, 71, 175, and 192°C, respectively.
