Abstract

Open-pit mining activities often face technical challenges related to slope stability,which directly impact occupational safety and production continuity. PT Bumi Merapi Energi, a company operating in the coal mining industry, has experienced a slope failure in the low wall area of Pit Gunung Agung Barat due to the presence of a weak layer identified as clay shale. This study aims to analyze the stability of the low wall slope using the Limit Equilibrium Method, conducted through analysis with Rockscience Slide v.6.0 software, and referring to the safety factor thresholds set by Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Regulation No. 1827K/30/MEM/2018. The parameters analyzed include slope geometry, material properties (cohesion, internal friction angle, and unit weight), lithology, groundwater level, and seismic load. The analysis was carried out under three conditions for the overall slope (dry, saturated static, and saturated dynamic), and two conditions for other analyses. The results show that sections A-A’ and B-B’ do not meet the minimum safety factor in the saturated dynamic condition (SF < 1.05), with values of 0.785 and 0.935, and section A-A also remains unstable under the saturated static condition (SF< 1.3), with a value of 1.074. In contrast, section C-C’ remains stable under all conditions. The instability is caused by the presence of clay shale, high groundwater levels, and seismic loads. Mitigation was carried out by recommending a redesign through modifications in slope angle, height, and bench width. The new design increased the safety factor to 1.351 (saturated static) and 1.065 (saturated dynamic) for section A-A’, and 1.073 (saturated dynamic) for section B-B’. This indicates that the new design meets the minimum safety factor requirement and is suitable to support mine safety and operational sustainability.
