Abstract
Contributing Factors to Peripheral Nerve Conduction in Children with Type 1 Diabetes Background: (T1DM) in children results from autoimmune destruction of pancreatic β-cells, leading to absolute insulin deficiency and chronic hyperglycemia. This condition poses a risk for long-term complications, including diabetic peripheral neuropathy, which may affect sensory, motor, or autonomic nerves and often remains subclinical in the early stages. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate nerve conduction findings and identify contributing factors among pediatric patients with T1DM. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from July 2024 to May 2025, involving 52 pediatric patients aged 1–18 years with type 1 diabetes mellitus from outpatient units at the Department of Pediatrics, Dr. Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital, Palembang. All participants underwent physical examination, laboratory testing (hbA1C), diabetic complication screening [(neuropathy, nephropathy and nerve conduction studies (NCS)]. Data were analyzed using Chi-square and Fisher’s exact tests, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05. Results: Peripheral neuropathy was identified in 15 (29.6%) of the children with T1DM. No significant associations were found between neuropathy and factors such as disease duration, glycemic control, or other organ involvement (p>0.05). Conclusion: Peripheral neuropathy was identified among children with type 1 diabetes, but showed no significant association with disease duration, glycemic control, or multisystem involvement. Keywords: peripheral nerve conduction, peripheral neuropathy, type 1 diabetes mellitus
