Abstract
This study aims to analyze Australia’s strategic response to the evolving security complexities in the South Pacific following the signing of the China-Solomon Islands Security Agreement in 2022. The research is grounded in the Regional Security Complex Theory (RSCT) developed by Barry Buzan and Ole Waever, focusing on four key variables: boundary, anarchic structure, polarity, and social construction. A descriptive qualitative method is employed, utilizing literature review and document analysis as the primary data collection techniques, drawing from secondary sources such as policy reports, scholarly journals, official publications from governments and international organizations, as well as news and media reports. The findings reveal that Australia perceives China’s growing presence in the region as a threat to its traditional influence and the regional stability it has long maintained. Through the boundary variable, Australia views the agreement as an infringement on its sphere of influence in the South Pacific. The anarchic structure variable highlights the entry of external actors into the region without a supranational security authority. The polarity variable reflects a shift in regional power dynamics from unipolarity to bipolarity, while the social construction dimension underscores the evolving amity-enmity patterns among states. In response, Australia has adopted strategic policies including enhanced defense cooperation, strengthened regional diplomacy, and increased development assistance as measures to maintain the balance of power. This study concludes that Australia’s response is systematic and multidimensional, underscoring its pivotal role in safeguarding regional stability and protecting its national interests in the South Pacific.
