Abstract
Background: Porphyromonas gingivalis was one of the Gram-negative anaerobic bacteria that played an important role in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease. The increasing resistance of bacteria to synthetic antibiotics encouraged the search for alternative antibacterial agents from natural sources. Snakehead fish (Channa striata) was known to contain bioactive compounds such as albumin and minerals, which had potential antibacterial properties. Objective: To evaluate the antibacterial effectiveness of snakehead fish (Channa striata) bone extract at concentrations of 10%, 15%, and 20% against P. gingivalis. Methods: This study was an in vitro laboratory research. Bone extract of Channa striata was obtained using the maceration method, followed by antibacterial testing using the disc diffusion method on agar media inoculated with P. gingivalis. Results: The snakehead fish bone extract exhibited an inhibitory effect on the growth of P. gingivalis in a concentration-dependent manner, with significant inhibition zones observed at certain concentrations. Conclusion: Snakehead fish (Channa striata) bone extract showed antibacterial effects against Porphyromonas gingivalis. Keywords: antibacterial, Channa striata, periodontal disease, Porphyromonas gingivalis, snakehead fish bone
