Abstract
This study aims to perform a neutronic analysis of a Thorium Oxide (TOX) fuel cell design with varying enrichments of U-235 isotope for application in the core of a Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) with a thermal power output of 300 MWth. The reactor core is analyzed under two conditions: fully inserted control rods (100%) and fully withdrawn control rods (0%). The fuel used is a (Th, U)O₂ mixture consisting of 40% thorium and 60% uranium, with U-235 enrichment variations of 0%, 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, 10%, and 12.5%. Depletion calculations are conducted over a duration of 720 days using the OpenMC software and the ENDF/B-VIII.0 nuclear data library. The results show that U-235 enrichment levels of 7.5% and 10% are optimal for application in PWR fuel cells. In core-level simulations, the configuration with 10% U-235 enrichment and inserted control rods yields the best performance, with a k_eff of 1.06473 at the Beginning of Cycle (BOC) and 1.02479 at the End of Cycle (EOC). Additional parameters evaluated to determine the optimal enrichment level include excess reactivity, neutron flux distribution, and the evolution of key nuclide densities. The study concludes that the use of (Th, U)O₂ fuel with 10% U-235 enrichment in a PWR core with control rods inserted is the most favorable configuration among the variations studied, for a 300 MWth power reactor with a two-year burnup period.
