Abstract

Small-scale tofu industries generate wastewater with high organic and inorganic content such as proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and ammonia, which increase BOD, COD, TSS levels and decrease dissolved oxygen. Direct discharge into water bodies can pollute the environment. One alternative for treating tofu wastewater is phytoremediation using aquatic plants. This research aims to: 1) Determine the most effective type of aquatic plant in reducing the levels of BOD, COD, TSS, and ammonia (NH₄⁺) in tofu wastewater. 2) Determine the most effective biomass weight in reducing the levels of BOD, COD, TSS, and ammonia (NH₄⁺) in tofu wastewater. 3) Determine the best interaction between the type of aquatic plant and biomass weight in reducing the levels of BOD, COD, TSS, and ammonia (NH₄⁺) in tofu wastewater before being discharged into the environment. This study used a Factorial Randomized Block Design (RAKD). The first factor was the combination of aquatic plant species, consisting of genjer (Limnocharis flava) (T1), mata lele (Lemna minor) (T2), paku air (Azolla pinnata) (T3), genjer (Limnocharis flava) + mata lele (Lemna minor) (T4), genjer (Limnocharis flava) + paku air (Azolla pinnata) (T5), mata lele (Lemna minor) + paku air (Azolla pinnata) (T6), and genjer (Limnocharis flava) + mata lele (Lemna minor) + paku air (Azolla pinnata) (T7). The second factor was the biomass weight of the aquatic plants, consisting of 0.1 kg (B1), 0.2 kg (B2), and 0.3 kg (B3). The treatments were repeated 3 times. Quantitative parameters observed included wet weight, dry weight of plants, BOD, COD, TSS, ammonia (NH4+), pH, odor, and temperature. Qualitative parameters were based on the morphological appearance of the plants, using a camera for documentation. Observations were made weekly, on days 7, 14, 21, and 28. The results showed that genjer was more effective in reducing COD, BOD, and TSS, while mata lele and its combination with genjer were most effective in reducing ammonia. A weight of 0.1–0.2 kg was effective in reducing COD, BOD, and TSS, while 0.3 kg was effective in reducing ammonia and produced the highest wet and dry weight. The best interaction was obtained in genjer aquatic plants with a biomass weight of 0.1 kg in reducing COD and TSS, genjer with a biomass weight of 0.2 kg in reducing BOD and mata lele with a biomass weight of 0.3 kg in reducing ammonia levels.
