Abstract
The traditional knowledge of the Penesak ethnic group in Tanjung Batu Subdistrict, Ogan Ilir Regency, South Sumatra, on medicinal plant use has been passed down through generations. This study aims to document the medicinal plant species used by the Penesak people, including the plant parts used, methods of use, types of illnesses treated, and the use value of each species and family. It also identifies native plant species and their processing methods. The study was conducted from December 2024 to January 2025 in eight villages: Bangun Jaya, Limbang Jaya I & II, Pajar Bulan, Tanjung Atap, Tanjung Laut, Tanjung Pinang II, and Tanjung Tambak. Data were collected through field observation and interviews with traditional healers (battra). The Penesak community utilizes 93 plant species from 47 families to treat 58 illnesses. Leaves are the most commonly used part, and oral consumption (66%) is the dominant method. Species with the highest use value include Annona muricata, Isotoma longiflora, Carica papaya, Piper betle, Piper ornatum, Zingiber officinale, Z. officinale var. rubrum, and Curcuma longa. Ten families showed the highest use value, including Acanthaceae, Annonaceae, and Zingiberaceae. Aporosa aurita (pelangas) is a distinctive local plant used traditionally to boost appetite.
