Abstract

EFFECT OF MAHOGANY LEAF EXTRACT (Swietenia mahagoni L. Jacq.) ON THE HISTOLOGICAL STRUCTURE OF GASTRIC MUCOSA IN MICE (Mus musculus L.) Tegar Adi Wibowo 08082622327002 RESUME Traditional medicine has long been the most widely used form of treatment for various human diseases across the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that approximately 80% of the population in developing countries relies on traditional plant-based medicine for healthcare needs. The mahogany plant (Swietenia mahagoni (L.) Jacq.) is well known among the public as a traditional remedy, with every part of the plant being potentially medicinal. Mahogany belongs to the Meliaceae family. This study was conducted from July 2024 to October 2024, with the collection of mahogany leaf samples taking place around the Sriwijaya University campus in Indralaya, South Sumatra. The research employed a quantitative experimental method and simple random sampling. The results showed that the percentage yield of the mahogany leaf extract was 15.55%. The extract contained flavonoid and terpenoid compounds. Oral administration of mahogany leaf extract at doses of 500 mg/kgBW, 1,000 mg/kgBW, and 2,000 mg/kgBW appeared to reduce the number of ulcers in the gastric mucosa, with average ulcer indices of 3, 2, and 1, respectively. Treatment group 3, which received a dose of 2,000 mg/kgBW, showed an effect nearly equivalent to that of the positive control in reducing the number of gastric ulcers in mice, indicating potential anti-ulcer activity. Key words : Gastric mucosa, Mahogany leaf extract, Mice.
